One Qatari riyal (QR) can be subdivded into 100 dirhams. There are seven denominations of Qatari riyal banknotes in circulation: QR 1, QR 5, QR 10, QR 50, QR 100, QR 200 and QR 500; and two frequently-used coins: 25 dirham and 50 dirham.

The current series of Qatari Riyal banknotes in circulation is the 'Qatari Culture' series which was introduced by the Qatar Central Bank in 2020. Each banknote in the Qatari Culture series showcases different aspects of Qatari culture, heritage, and development. For example, the QR 1 note features an image of the Qatari flag, a dhow (traditional sailing vessel), and an oil rig, symbolising Qatar's maritime and oil industry. The higher denominations depict various landmarks, including the iconic Museum of Islamic Art, the Education City Mosque, the iconic Al Zubarah Fort, and the Qatar National Library.
